Todd Wawrousek – Vancouver Whitecaps Assistant Coach on JMS Podcast

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Todd Wawrousek

Today’s guest on the Jared Montz Soccer Podcast is Todd Wawrousek.  Todd is the assistant coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the USL1.  This Saturday Todd will try to lead his Whitecaps to their 2nd straight USL1 Championship when they take on the Montreal Impact in Montreal at 2:30pm eastern time.  It will be no easy task facing the Impact who have a 3-2 lead over the Whitecaps from the first leg of the series.  Plus they will have to face Montreal’s 12th man, a sell out crowd of 13,000 plus fans, without their Captain Martin Nash who was red carded in the first leg.

On the podcast we talked about Todd’s long tenure as a coach in America, the changes he has seen in the game, what it takes to be a successful assistant coach, discussed their 1st leg loss, took some user submitted questions, and then previewed this epic all Canadian 2nd leg USL1 final!

Enjoy!

Thanks for listening to the Jared Montz Soccer Podcast with Todd Wawrousek.  If you are in Montreal I would tell you to get out and go to the final but unless you already have tickets there is no chance of that happening because it is sold out!  The game starts at 2:30pm eastern time and will be live on Fox Soccer Channel.

What do you think of Todd’s long coaching career?  Can you imagine coaching the against the LA Galaxy and David Beckham in front of 50,000ish fans?  Do you think Vancouver can come back from their first leg loss to win the Championship?  Excited to see Vancouver will be an MLS team in 2011?  Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments below in the comments section.  Or let me know what you think via Facebook, Twitter, or your Online Soccer Academy account.

Montreal vs. Puerto Rico Preview w/ Montreal’s Joey Gjersten

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Today the Montreal Impact take on the Puerto Rico Islanders in the 2nd leg of the USL1 Semi finals in Puerto Rico.  Game time is 5pm central time.  Montreal currently leads the series 2-1 with a victory in Montreal this past Thursday.

Montreal’s leader in games played this season, Joey Gjersten, took some time out of his busy weekend to answer a few questions for us.  He didn’t play in Thursday night’s game due to an ankle injury but is expected to be back for tonight’s match.

——–

JM – What happened with your injury?

JG – I just had a bit of bad luck on my injury. I got a long ball played to me over the top and as I got to the ball I planted to cut the ground slid out and I just rolled over on my ankle.  I make these runs many times throughout a game, unfortunately for me this one happened to be in the 3rd minute of the 1st game in the quarterfinals.

JM – Can we expect you to be available for the 2nd leg of the semi finals?

JG – I don’t think I can ever sit at home and watch my team in a playoff game again.  Feeling so helpless was torture!  So yes, I’ve done everything possible to be healthy for this weekend and will be playing.

JM – So far this season you are leading the team in games played but only started half of those.  What is your role in the team?  Having said you will be playing today how will the team be using you?

JG – My role has changed a lot throughout the year.  We had a mid-season coaching change and as our team has had many ups and downs I feel I have also. I’ve played many positions and have done so as a starter and as a reserve.  Down the stretch we’ve made some changes in our formation and its worked out well for us.  I’ve landed in an attacking position with lots of freedom and I enjoy this.  I view this position as a challenge to be as creative and dangerous as I can be.

JM – Yall played a game Thursday in Montreal.  Sunday the 2nd leg is in Puerto Rico.  That is about 2,000 miles of air travel.  How do you keep yourself physically fresh and mentally sharp in a series like this?

JG – Luckily I’m not carrying any fatigue from the game Thursday because I was in the stands.  As for the rest of the guys, its different for every player.  We all have experience with the grueling travel in the USL and everybody has there own way to deal with it.  For me its sleep, the more time in the hotel bed the better ;) We flew Friday morning so I think everybody has had plenty of time to recover fully and can focus on the task ahead.

JM – What will be the keys to getting a result in Puerto Rico?

JG – Well, we’ve only lost 1 game in our last 11 so we need to keep doing what we’ve been doing… have fun on the field.  It will be 40 degrees hotter than it was in Montreal so come kick off we have to forget about that, block out the hostile fans in Bayamon and just play!

———–

The game will not be aired on Fox Soccer Channel but I am hoping you can watch the game live on USLLive.com at 5pm central time.

What do you think about the travel both teams have to make in this series?  Will it be a factor in tonight’s match?  Who is going to win the series?  Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments in the comments section below.
