“My First Pre-season” by Heather Nosky

Heather Nosky

Heather Nosky is a guest blogger in my college soccer guest blogging series that will be happening this fall.  The series is a way for my Online Soccer Academy players and readers to see what it’s like to be a college soccer player and share in some of these players’ experiences.

Heather is a special guest member in my Online Soccer Academy and just started her freshman year at Louisiana State University in Shreveport; an NAIA College in Shreveport, Louisiana.  After growing up in Houston, Texas she is adapting well to life in Louisiana.  You can follow her season in real time on Twitter.

Hey everyone! How is school going?  Most of you just started a few weeks ago, but mine started almost a month before everyone else because I had to be at college for pre-season.
My dream ever since I was little was to play college soccer, so as you can imagine I was scared out of my mind on the first day of preseason.  All the upperclassmen that I had been talking to had been making me nervous because they were talking about all the tests we had to do and saying how hard they were.  The first day we did the beep test and some jumping and agility tests, but it was not too hard.  The next day we did some tests to see 1) how well we sustained our sprints over a long period of time and 2) how quickly we accelerated, still not hard.  I was wondering if all the practices would be this easy… they weren’t!  The third day was when we really started working.  We started with a warm up, then did a drill hard for 5 minutes, ran a 120 sprint, did a drill hard, ran another 120 sprint and we did this for a whole two hour practice the next three days!  Then for the next week every morning before we did any drills we would run a timed mile.  One day we even did the timed mile to start, did drills, and then ran a timed two mile at the end!  Finally the practices started getting less run focused and more technically focused two days before our first scrimmage.
We had been told to arrive in the gym to get our uniforms from our coach at 3:30pm for a 5:00pm game, so naturally, my roommate and I showed up at 3:15.  As we walked into the gym to get our jerseys I could feel the excitement in the air.  All the freshmen, myself included, were ready to get our collegiate careers started and all the returners were ready to start a new season.  We ended up winning the game 4-0 and went home happy!  Since then we have won both of our other scrimmages, one 4-0 the other 1-0 and kept our coach happy.  The season looks to be challenging but not impossible to take on.  The upperclassmen say that some schools that they played last year are hard, but since our team has gotten stronger, they aren’t sure what to expect.
Although preseason was tough, everyone helped each other out during the running and drills by cheering and encouraging each other on!  Because we were together six days a week for three weeks plus “pasta parties” we have all gotten to know each other really well and our team chemistry is amazing!  I think it is probably because we all get along so well and understand each other that we have done so well thus far.
Even though it hasn’t been said out loud by anyone yet, I think the main thing we are setting our sights on this season is a conference championship!  We are all working as hard as we can to keep in very good shape so that in the first ten minutes and last ten minutes of each half we will be ready for anything that comes our way!
