Livin the Dream at the Abdehou’s

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

This past weekend I was in Shreveport for my last soccer camp of the offseason.  In the summer at my pre-college camp there were some high school age players who invited me and my assistant coach to have dinner at their house with their parents.  It was Friday night and the end of the week so we gladly accepted.  As we pull into their house I see there is a mini soccer field (I mean mini like a 1/3 of a real field; still big) fenced in with lights and perfect grass! I couldn’t believe it, it was awesome!  Dinner was great and the family was really nice and offered that I could stay with them the next time I was in town.

Needless to say I have been thinking about staying with them since the last camp because their house is just a soccer players dream!  The two boys, Dean and Jordan, are seriously living the dream there.  They are good kids with good heads on their shoulders and it is credit to their parents Mr. and Mrs. Abdehou.  Dean let me stay in his room while he slept on the game room floor, which was very nice of him and I certainly appreciated it.  At the time I was heading up I was training like crazy and working like crazy between the camps and my new Online Soccer Academy that just launched so I was looking forward to just being a high school kid for a couple of days when I wasn’t at camp.

Curious to know what it takes to be a cool high school kid these days; I soon found out.  It mostly consisted of hanging out, watching funny youtube videos, facebook, playstation, and talking soccer!  I wasn’t good at the playstation, but everything else I think I am still cool enough to hang!!

It was great, when I wanted to train I just walked in the backyard and trained!

On that Sunday morning the Manchester United vs Chelsea game was on (thankfully I had time to watch it before camp).  Where did we watch it?  In heaven!!

The older player Jordan is a good player, but doesn’t have any desire to play college soccer.  Fair play to him for knowing early he doesn’t want to do that. His dream is to go to UCLA!  The younger brother, Dean, is a soccer fanatic.  I love playing soccer too but a few times I had turn him down from going outside to play because it was 10 at night! His room was covered in soccer posters all over the walls.  It was definetly refreshing living like that again and remembering what it is like to be a young kid with a dream! Even though not much has changed for me at 26, except now I am a big kid with a dream and my fiance won’t let me hang soccer posters on our walls!!

Dean is a very good player and quite the funny character.  He was making me laugh the whole time I was there.  He is a freshman, plays club soccer, and holds his own and then some on the Varsity.  The kid’s got some good skills and he makes youtube videos showcasing his talents.  Its pretty impressive and he has like 5,500 hits on one of his videos (I am jealous)!!  While I was there we made a soccer skills video for his channel that I am featuring in so as soon as it comes out I will post it on the blog.  For now check out one of his more popular videos below; pretty cool!!

Special thanks to the Abdehou’s for letting me live the dream at their soccer fantasy land in Shreveport and I look forward staying with them again at my next camp!

Just cleaning out my closet

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Its been a great week and I trained 4 days straight of two a days with no ice and my legs feel amazing!  Now it is time for me to clean out my closet at my parents house and get everything in order for me to leave Louisiana in a few days.  Usually a big cleaning like these leaves me with a bunch of good memories! This picture below is of all the trophies I have amassed in my youth career in soccer and baseball.  It is time to put them in storage and use the closet for other things, but even though they are dusty it is fun to look back with a smile!

Some old Trophies

I am looking forward to going after more trophies at the pro level this coming season.  Nothing beats lifting a championship trophy with your teammates, family, friends, and fans! No matter what level you are playing at!!

I autographed a kid’s forehead!!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Let me explain.  Have you ever seen Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby?  I am a big Will Ferrell fan and he makes me laugh every time I watch one of his movies.  My friends and I at training will sometimes be goofing off saying lines from his movies.  In this particular movie he is a NASCAR driver and the best one on the tour.  At one point he is signing autographs for fans and this lady comes up with her baby and without even asking Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) says, “Of course I’ll sign your baby’s head!”.  That line cracked me up.

So at camp sometimes during the autograph and pictures session, which is the last thing to happen at camp I will tease kids about signing their foreheads, but I never do.  It has been about two years that I have been saying it.  Usually what happens is a 5-6 year old will come up and when I ask what to sign they just give me this blank look, so then I say, “would you like me to sign your forehead?”  I never do but it puts a smile on the kid’s face.  I joke with older players too when they don’t know what to say either.

So at camp in Shreveport some of the older players must have heard me saying that because this kid, Alex Baca, comes up and asked me to sign his forehead.  I am using Sharpie (permeant black marker) by the way.  I told the kid, you don’t want me to do that.  He insisted, so I asked his mom if it was okay and she said YES!!!  Check out the pic below.

It didn’t take long for me to sign my second and third forehead after that because two more kids came up and asked for it too!  That ranks up there with coolest things I have signed, the other being someone’s Iphone!  What can I say; I’m just livin the dream!

JMS Gear at Wrigley Field!!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Check out my man R.C. Edwards sporting his navy short sleeve JMS academy training top on the ice at Wrigley Field in Chicago! For those of you that don’t know that is where the legendary Chicago Cubs play and it is one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the country.

R.C. at Wrigley Field

This is what R.C. had to say about what he was doing on ice at a baseball field.

“My Jared Montz gear made it to the Wrigley Field Ice rink.  I hope you can use one of these pictures on your blog to start to get people sending you picks of your gear in cool places.  Two days after the Red Wings/Blackhawks winter classic at Wrigley Field Marissa and I got tickets to skate on the ice there.  It was a very uniques experience.  If you can’t tell I’m facing home plate and the press box in the pictures.”

R.C. thanks for sending in those pics and getting the idea off and running about emailing in the cool places you wear your JMS (Jared Montz Soccer) gear! To everyone else reading be sure and send in pics of you and your JMS gear and the cool places you wear it at and I will be sure to post it on the blog and give you a shout out!

Tourney Raises Cash for Youths

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

This morning I woke up and with my breakfast I was reading the Mandeville Picayune (Louisiana Paper) and saw a nice little article that Iris Vacante wrote about my Montz Soccer Tennis Tournament I put on in late December.  It was my first charity event I have run and wasn’t bad for a first time out.  Thanks to St. Tammany Arena for helping me out we were able to raise a few bucks for the local scholarship funds to help some kids who can’t afford the cost to play soccer.

Click here to read the article.  Post a comment below to let me know what you think?  I plan to do it again next winter so I am looking forward to seeing some of you there!!

Ice Bath on the Go

Friday, January 16th, 2009

The past three nights I have been training at Pelican Park in Mandeville, Louisiana and it has been in the 30’s!  Now that doesn’t compare with Chicago right now or some of the rest of the country, but that is cold!  I have been doing my own two a days to get ready for pre season and my night sessions have been excellent.  I am working hard for about two hours and fifteen minutes or so every night and my legs are feeling great the next day!! Since my surgery I have had to ice my groin and hip and take ice baths to keep on top of it and rid the soreness quickly.  The past three nights I haven’t iced at all but I feel refreshed each new day I wake up!  Part of it is that I am healthy now and feeling like my old self again but the other part I think is being so cold while training and my legs being numb makes me wonder if it is like an ice bath on the go?  Maybe I am knocking out two birds out with one stone?

Today was the MLS draft and I am proud to say a player from my alma mater, Lynn University, was selected 12th overall to Real Salt Lake.  His name is Jean Alexander and I want to wish him all the best at his new team.  This guy had a great senior year scoring 23 goals and registering 7 assists and was named an All-American.  I think ending with such a great year should give him the confidence he needs to excel at the pro level; good luck Jean!

Did you follow the draft today?  Any thoughts? If so, please share them in the comments section below.
